Cat Care - Best Cat Food

By: Dave Articlesubmit

When you first get a cat you will discover that they do enjoy their food. But what is the best cat food for your pet. There is a wide choice available these days, just look at the pet food aisle of your local supermarket and you will find a huge selection. However, the choice can be confusing, should you go for canned, sachets, dry or fresh food.
Not only is there a wide range of normal cat foods but there are also some that are produced specifically to meet the needs of cats of a certain age. You can buy kitten, food, food for senior cats and even food that will help the cat get rid of hairballs.
If you opt for either canned or sachet packed food you can be assured that your cat will be getting a balanced diet. Each serving will contain the correct amount of nutrients and vitamins to ensure the cats wellbeing. There is a wide range of meals available including most varieties of meats and fish flavours. It often pays to buy a box of mixed meals because cats like humans do not like eating the same meal time after time.
Dry foods are becoming increasingly popular because like canned food they come in a variety of flavours and many cats seem to prefer them. There are some ranges of dry cat food by manufacturers such as Hill and IAMS which are designed for cats with medical problems such as kidney or urinary ailments. If you feed your cat dry food it is essential that you make sure that your cat has an adequate supply of drinking water.
Most cats enjoy a meal of fresh food from time to time. Some experts say you should restrict this to just once or twice a week but I believe that you can be a little more generous than that. Foods such as minced beef and poultry are popular with many cats. Some cats quite like the occasional scrambled egg which is fine but you should never give a cat a raw egg or for that matter uncooked chicken.
It was not that long ago that nearly all cats were given full fat milk to drink, this has now been proved not to be good for cats. The problem is that they cannot digest the lactose that it contains because they do not have the enzyme in their bodies that is needed to do this. Drinking milk can often lead to a cat having severe diarrhoea. There are some special milk substitutes for cats and kittens available.
To start with it is going to be very much trial and error but rest assured it will not be long before your cat will be showing you which foods it prefers. A cat is not above totally ignoring any food it does not like.
